Approach to Integrating Content Subjects
The integration of the content subjects into the Language Arts Curriculum has led me to rethink my teaching approach.
The content area lessons will be stations that the students will take part in either independently or with a partner. The stations don't have to be a physical space in your classroom. My stations will be in a bin, labelled with the content subject. There will be 4 stations per week. There may be a Health centre, Science centre, Social Studies centre and Art centre to complete in one week. However if a lesson requires several periods to complete, it may be in 2 different stations, so there will only be 3 subject areas focused on for that week. The students are required to take part in all of the stations each week but have the choice of choosing the station they would like to do each day. The fifth day of the week will be an opportunity to finish any stations which are incomplete. If all of their work is completed there will be some free choice activities. (example: read online books, free write)
