Lesson Focus: Mapping Skills
Students will learn and practice using mapping a variety of mapping skills. (Cardinal directions, map grids & map scale)
Timeframe: 45 Minutes

I can use cardinal directions to describe the location of places on a map.
I can use a map grid to find and describe the location of places on a map.
I can use a map scale to find the distance between two places.
Outcomes:
Students locate their province in the Atlantic region
· use the cardinal points to locate and describe my province in the Atlantic region.
Students will communicate effectively and clearly and respond personally and critically.
· demonstrate effective active listening habits in multiple cultural contexts
· respond to and give directions that are multi-step with increased complexity
Students will demonstrate a variety of ways to comprehend and select from a range of culturally diverse print and digital texts.
· monitor and self correct quickly, confidently, independently with automaticity
· read independently with stamina
· apply a variety of word-solving strategies
· use text features to gather information and support comprehension (captions, diagrams, maps)
· use picture cues to support understanding
· demonstrate comprehension - thinking within, thinking about and thinking beyond the text
· infer meaning within and beyond a variety of texts

Explicit Teaching (I Do)
Tell students to watch the Mapping Slide Show. There are 4 places in the slideshow that you will click to watch a video. Throughout the slideshow you will use the mapping skills discussed to play a variety of games. Simply click on each game. At the end of the slideshow you will complete a mapping worksheet to show what you have learned.
Independent/Group(You do)
Each student watches the Mapping Slide Show and the videos linked within the slide show. They will practice the mapping skills presented in the videos by playing online mapping skills games which are also linked within the slide show. They have the option to work with a partner or on their own.
Each student will then complete the Mapping worksheet on their own.
Time to Share (We share)
Circle Time: Each student will share 1 thing that they learned today.
Differentiation:
Students can work with a partner for support.
