Lesson Focus: Where is Nova Scotia?
Students will locate Nova Scotia on a world map and a map of Canada. They will be able to identify and locate
the provinces and the bodies of water in the Atlantic Region
Timeframe: 45 Minutes

Outcomes:
Students locate their province in the Atlantic region
· gather information about the location of the province in relation to the Atlantic Canadian region.
· describe my province’s location( in both print and digital formats) in relation to the significant bodies of water surrounding it.
Students will communicate effectively and clearly and respond personally and critically.
· demonstrate effective active listening habits in multiple cultural contexts
· respond to and give directions that are multi-step with increased complexity

Mini-lesson:
Explicit Teaching (I Do)
Tell students to take their Social Studies text book, "My Province". They will need to look at pg 19 during the video.
Show students how to spread the clay, creating a thin layer, on the index card and show them how they can press small pieces of index card into the clay to label the provinces and bodies of water. Explain to the students that they will be doing this activity after they view the video. Tell the students that the Assignment outline is at the station.
Group(You do)
Students watch screencast, Where is Nova Scotia? with a partner at the Social Studies Station.
They will find Nova Scotia on a variety of maps.
Independent(You do)
Spread clay onto an index card to create an artistic representation of the Atlantic Region. Each province should be identifiable by their shape and should be a different colour. The water should be made of blue clay. Cut small pieces of another index card and write the name of each province and the bodies of water. Press these pieces of index cards into the clay, in the appropriate locations.
Time to Share (We share)
Students volunteer to find Nova Scotia on World Map and a Map of Canada on the SmartBoard. They also name and locate the 4 Atlantic provinces and the bodies of water in the Atlantic Region on an unlabeled map of the Atlantic Region, on the SmartBoard.
Differentiation:
Students can look at the Atlantic Region map on pg 19 of the Social Studies textbook, and/or the video.
