Lesson Focus: Making friends – Students will discover ways to make friends and interact positively with others.
Timeframe: Three 45 Minute periods

Outcomes:
Students will communicate ways to manage difficulties in friendship when they arise in multiple cultural contexts.

· Publishing/information sharing: publish student-selected final pieces of writing that demonstrate grade level traits and conventions

Mini-lesson
Explicit Teaching (I Do)
Show the video: Friends (Brainpopjr). Discuss what happened in the video. Ask class “Can anyone make a connection to something that has happened to them?” Choose a few volunteers to share.
Display the book, Can We Be Friends? (Epic books website) on the SmartBoard. Read the story. The teacher makes a few connections.
Divide students into small groups. Assign each group a section of the book.
Groups (We do)
Each group rereads their section of the book on a digital device. They discuss the text and make some jot notes. The students then watch the video: How to use Google Drawing. Students then communicate what they have learned, from the section of the book (“Can We Be Friends?” by John Burstein) they read,using Google Drawings. Their finished product should contain text with complete sentences and an appropriate picture which enhances the meaning for the viewer.
Time to Share (We share)
Students present their finished product and answer any questions.
Differentiation:
Working with a partner helps students who have difficulty reading and/or understanding the content.
Enrichment: Students discover other elements of the google draw program.
Students share their discoveries with their peers.
Students assist other students who are having difficulty navigating the google draw program
